The Carumba Institute provides a world class Indigenous research and educational environment that foregrounds Indigenous sovereignty. We recognise the centrality of land to Indigenous Australian culture, identity, and spirituality; the significance of intellectual work that affirms Indigenous Australian rights to country and the criticality of Indigenous Australian knowledges to a sustainable future.

The word carumba means great, outstanding or significant, and was given by Yugara Elder Kerry Charlton, who works on Yugara Language revitalisation, family and community history, culture, education and research.
Our team bring years of valuable experience to the Carumba Institute, and form part of a teaching, research and supervisory team that's dedicated to building Indigenous research excellence.

We provide a range of services to QUT’s Indigenous research students. The Indigenous Postgraduate Programs Officer provides assistance, mentorship and support for all aspects of research degree candidature, while dedicated study spaces are available at our Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point offices.
